First, in Maryland, officers from the Prince George's County Police Department responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, to the area of the northbound lanes of Indian Head Highway near East Swann Creek Road, where a pedestrian had been struck.
Officials say that the driver of the striking vehicle remained at the site of the collision during the investigation into the crash, but the woman who was hit was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hours later, a similar scene in Fairfax County played out shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
In this case, members of the Fairfax County Police Department were called to Lee Highway near the intersection of Centrewood Drive in Centreville, where there were reports of a second pedestrian who had also died at the scene from injuries sustained in the second crash.
Neither pedestrian was identified by police, nor was an age provided by investigators.
Both incidents led to temporary lane closures in the region as police investigated and cleared the scenes. Each remains under active investigation.
